Some very slight change in that things attempted to warm up sometime last night beneath the big and brilliant stars, then chilled again under a whisper of snow, so that the trees are now waltzing with a scintillating coat of crystals all over. The grand German oaks with their incredibly intricate branchings look like diamond-colored corals which some jeweler has decorated with crows here and there.  Surpasses Breughel now. I seem to be feeding an itinerant roebuck; the scraps I leave for it are gone each morning, and its tracks lead from the woods, to the food, to the frozen pond, and for some reason always right up to my window before turning back to the trees. If I made a Take-Out signboard and hung it up I could probably feed it right through the window. Excepting the wildlife, the place is deserted, and I don’t expect to see anyone around for a couple of weeks. There are dazzling stars of ice covering my upstairs bedroom skylight, the sidereal white light of impossible worlds needle through at night; sailing off to sleep is a celebration.
