THE BODY IN THE LAKE

c 1978 Tristan Winter

i almost drowned today (goddamn). buried alive in elements unknown, a good ten feet of recycled sewage, acid rain and other mysteries which come with amnesia and loss of appetite. i was my own glass and I could fill it as much as I wished. really, nobody seemed to mind at all. I tried not to listen to the voices below. I dove again and again, because, if I can swim at all, it would be under water. none of this float your way to wealth for me. i rocketed to shore and wrote imprecations in the sand with my polluted tears. life indignant shakes its tiny fist.
